Neva Sills is a visual artist whose work navigates the space between history, materiality, and the constructed ideas surrounding femininity and nature. Through painting, drawing, collage, installation, and ceramics, her practice moves fluidly between poetic sensitivity and playful absurdity, using decorative language as both subject and strategy.
Her work often riffs on historical references to femininity and ornamentation, reassembling them into compositions that feel simultaneously intimate and subversive. Fragmented figures, botanical forms, and layered surfaces appear throughout her practice, inviting viewers to consider how cultural narratives are built, repeated, and disrupted. Sills’ use of collage — both painted and drawn — emphasises process, intuition, and the physical act of making.
Sills received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Iowa, where she was an Iowa Arts Fellow, and her BFA in Painting from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her work has been shown widely throughout the Midwest in both group and solo exhibitions, as well as in collaborative projects with The Moving Crew. Across exhibitions, her work consistently explores the tension between structure and play, refinement and mess, control and spontaneity.
Alongside her studio practice, Neva Sills has taught in higher education for nearly two decades. Teaching and collaboration play a significant role in her artistic outlook, informing a practice that values shared inquiry, experimentation, and dialogue. Whether working in two or three dimensions, her approach remains grounded in an exploration of materials and the expressive potential of a single mark.
Her portfolio website reflects this thoughtful balance between clarity and complexity, allowing individual works to breathe while maintaining a cohesive visual language. It offers a compelling look at how diverse media can coexist within a unified artistic practice.
